Sea of Thieves will be down today as Xbox and developer Rare plans to roll out a big new update for the title.
Starting today, eager sea-faring players will be able to download and enjoy the the Ships of Fortune update, which is pegged for a release date of April 22.
In order to roll out the patch to all games, Microsoft will be taking the game offline from 10am(UK time) , at which point users on Xbox One and PC will be able to download the latest patch.
At the time of writing, there is no estimate as to how long the downtime is scheduled to last – though we expect downtime to be inline with what we’ve seen from previous updates.
That means the game may be offline for at least an hour.
Microsoft stated on Twitter:
“Attention pirates! The Sea of Thieves servers will be offline from 10am BST tomorrow, Wednesday 22nd, so that the Ships of Fortune update can dock safely. Please plan your Voyages accordingly!”
The full patch notes for the game have not yet been published by the developer or the publisher, but some of the headline changes coming to the game have been revealed by Rare.
“The Ships of Fortune update arrives April 22nd and introduces new PvP Trading Company The Reaper’s Bones, the rewarding but risky Emissary system, an increased reputation cap for most Trading Companies, crew reviving, Arena 2.0 and, most im-paw-tantly, CATS!” says a statement from the developer.
So if you want to recruit a scruffy Wildcat, a fluffy Ragamuffin or a slinky Mau to your ship’s crew, you’re in luck. Rare notes that each breed comes in different colours, and can be outfitted with different costumes.
Rare also notes that players will be able to take on the role of an emissary in the new update, in which they can work with trading companies to earn more rewards from their adventures, and give you even more reason to go on adventurers quests.
“Got a favourite Trading Company on the Sea of Thieves? The original Gold Hoarders, Merchant Alliance, Order of Souls and Athena’s Fortune each appeal to different players – and we’re expanding them with the option for players to become Emissaries in Ships of Fortune,” Microsoft explains.
“Taking on this special duty allows pirates to earn boosted rewards from their usual Voyages, plus special cosmetic rewards for those who perform best!
“Emissary roles are highly prized, so you’ll need to make a significant donation to prove you appreciate the privilege!”
If none of the current Trading Companies are your cup of tea, per se, don’t worry – there’s a new lot you can throw your hat in with: The Reaper’s Bones.
“A new and mysterious Company known as The Reaper’s Bones, teased throughout our previous monthly updates, has emerged!
“Keeping your fancy Emissary status with the Reaper’s Bones around won’t be so easy, as their own Emissaries have but one duty – to lay their rivals low and take their Emissary Flags as trophies! Of course, taking their loot is a close-running second priority.”
The new update is due to start rolling out soon – we’ll update you with more information as soon as we have it, and will share the patch notes as soon as they’re available.
